Requirements for an apostille in Great Britain

Great Britain acceded to the 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents. Therefore, for the use of documents issued in Great Britain, higher verification (superlegalization) is not required, and an apostille is sufficient.

  • The original document or its notarized copy can be apostilled (more detailed information can be found below in the specifics for individual documents).
  • It is not possible to apostille documents that contain foreign stamps or other markings. The document must also be in good condition, and the stamps on the document must be clearly legible.
  • The apostille certificate is a rectangular stamp. The information on the stamp is always filled in the English language, and the heading of the stamp necessarily includes the French title Apostille (Convention de la Haye du 5 octobre 1961).

Which British documents can be apostilled

  • Birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates
  • Educational documents (certificates, diplomas)
  • Criminal record extracts
  • DVLA – Confirmation of GB Driving license details
  • Extract from the commercial register
  • Court decisions
  • Notarized copies of documents
  • Notarized translations
  • Documents with a notarized signature (powers of attorney, declarations, etc.)
  • Commercial documents (articles of association, certificates of registration, tax registrations, etc.)

Specifics for individual documents

Educational documents

For diplomas, certificates, and other documents of education acquired in Great Britain, it is not possible to apostille the original document, but rather its notarized copy. A lawyer (solicitor) in the UK can also certify documents; however, care must be taken as some countries have issues recognizing an apostille on an educational document certified by a lawyer.

Therefore, we provide an apostille exclusively for notarized documents to avoid potential complications. You only need to deliver the original document to us; we will then arrange for its certified copy and the subsequent apostille.

Birth certificate

The original document itself is apostilled. We can also provide an apostille for its notarized copy, but this procedure must be approved in advance by the office where you intend to use the document.

Divorce decree

If the divorce decree is signed directly by a court official and stamped with a red seal, the original can be apostilled. Otherwise, it must first be verified by a notary in the UK and then apostilled. We will arrange the notarized copy in the UK.

Driving license – certificate

The apostille is issued directly on the document issued by the DVLA – Confirmation of GB Driving license details. However, this document must be signed by the responsible officer and also stamped with a round seal. You can view a sample here.

If you are unable to obtain the original, it is possible to download an online extract of this document; we will then provide a certified copy of the document followed by the apostille. This procedure must be approved in advance by the office where you intend to use the document. We recommend apostilling the original.
