Requirements for an apostille in Austria

Austria acceded to the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents of 1966. Therefore, for the use of documents issued in Austria, higher verification (legalization) is not required, but an apostille is sufficient.

  • It is possible to apostille exclusively the original document, only after which can a potential notary copy be prepared.
  • It is not possible to apostille documents containing foreign stamps or other markings. The document must also be in good condition, and the stamps on the document must be clearly legible.
  • The apostille clause is a rectangular stamp. The data on the stamp are always filled in the German language, and the heading of the stamp necessarily includes the French title Apostille (Convention de la Haye du 5 octobre 1961).

Which Austrian documents can be apostilled

  • Birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates
  • Educational documents (certificates, diplomas)
  • Extract from the commercial register
  • Court decisions
  • Notarized copies of documents

  • Documents on which the signature was verified by a notary (powers of attorney, declarations, etc.)
  • Commercial documents (articles of association, certificates of registration, tax registrations, etc.)
